what makes a funeral eco-friendly?
For the environmentally conscious, eco-friendly funerals can offer a simplistic ceremony in a more natural outdoor setting, designed with less harmful waste and to have a minimal impact on the environment.
The main three eco-friendly funeral options are:
- a natural or green burial in a woodland
- a natural or green burial in a memorial ground or cemetery
- a natural or green burial in your home or private land
what are green burials?
Green burials, also known as natural burials, are eco-friendly burials that have as little impact on the environment as possible. The body can be buried in an Colourful or Wicker coffin or casket, carefully selected from wicker, natural fibre or basic wood and sourced from sustainable forests, or it may be wrapped in a simple shroud instead. Due to the chemicals that are used in the process, embalming isn’t permitted.
woodland burials
Woodland burials provide a beautifully natural and friendly resting place for the environmentally conscious. Due to being in an ever-changing woodland area, graves are often left unmarked or with small discreet markings. This is so family and friends can identify the spot of their loved one without affecting the environment.
Often flowers or sentimental trees are planted in the area as a natural landmark, creating lasting memorials that benefit the environment. Once the ceremony has concluded, the deeds of ownership of the woodland plot are passed to the relatives or next of kin. These woodland plots can be purchased in advance for those who wish to be buried alongside their loved ones.
cremations
Eco-friendly or natural cremations use non-harmful chemicals in the embalming process and there is less waste when a casket or burial ground isn’t required. They do, however, use a considerable amount of energy during the cremation process and so can have a significant carbon footprint – many believe they are not as eco-friendly as a green burial.
are eco-friendly funerals cheaper?
Eco-friendly funerals can work out cheaper than traditional funeral services due to their simplicity. The cost of a burial plot and Colourful or Wicker coffin or casket will still need to be considered, although minimalist designs are available that can help reduce costs.
what is the most eco-friendly funeral?
A green funeral with a woodland burial is one of the most environmentally friendly funerals possible. With all factors of the funeral being considered and with the environment in mind, there is minimal impact on the environment compared to a traditional funeral.
